Choosing Among Different Greenhouse Styles

Greenhouses for sale come in different shapes and sizes. As greenhouse gardening rose in popularity, so did the demand for materials, labor, and expertise in building greenhouses. Through the years, a number of greenhouse designs have been introduced, with the most popular designs shown below:

  • Traditional. Based on early greenhouse designs, it features low vertical side walls known as kneewalls, which help conserve heat, block the wind, and protect the lower part of the structure. A roof angle of 45 degrees facilitates water runoff. In addition, ventilating roof windows provide ventilation. A high roof central ridge offers a lot of headspace.
  • Lean-To. This greenhouse design utilizes the wall of a house to serve as one of its walls. Since the greenhouse is attached to the house, access to utilities is easier. Lean-to greenhouses can follow an all-glass construction or allow the installation of kneewalls for more insulation.
  • Three-quarter span. A cross between the traditional and lean-to, this design takes advantage of heat insulation from the house wall, higher headspace, access to utilities, as well as kneewalls for added protection. However, this design costs more.
  • Dome. This type provides a more stable and wind-resistant design. Its geometric design allows multi-angled glass panels to transmit light efficiently. In addition, its low profile and robust design makes it suitable for exposed locations. However, the dome costs a significant amount of money to build compared to other designs.
  • Mini greenhouse. This low-cost design is normally made out of an aluminum frame with glass panels. It is designed to have one part attached to the wall for insulation purposes. Although it requires a small space, ventilation issues are more likely to occur due to poor ventilation design. In this case, a mini greenhouse may become dangerously hot inside.

There are other designs to choose from but most were designed for aesthetic value. If made to choose between form and function, function is priority since greenhouses are made to grow plants. Any hint of its aesthetic value would just be secondary.
